How Shock Wave Therapy Works
ESWT was first introduced in 1982 as a way to dissolve urinary stones so they could pass less painfully. As medical research progressed, it was found to be an effective treatment for tendonitis and other soft-tissue conditions. ESWT promotes collagen synthesis and tissue remodeling — among other benefits — improving the chances for a complete recovery from musculoskeletal pain without surgery.
Extracorporeal Shock Wave Therapy gets its name because shock waves — a type of sound wave — are delivered to the injured tissue “extracorporeally,” meaning above the skin. The device delivers impulses to the affected area, stimulating blood flow, relaxing muscles in spasm, and triggering tissue repair. Most patients feel immediate pain relief after the first treatment, while 6–10 treatments are usually needed for complete recovery. Each session takes only about 15 minutes.
